As part of its ongoing commitment to curbing drug abuse among young people, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Tin-Can Island Port Strategic Command held an anti-drug abuse sensitisation lecture at Park Royal College, Apapa, Lagos, over the weekend. This event is part of a nationwide school-based initiative spearheaded by NDLEA Chairman and CEO, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (RTD) CON, aiming to educate students about the dangers of drug abuse and empower them to make informed choices.
Commander Ofoyeju Mitchell of the NDLEA emphasized the importance of early intervention, describing the school outreach as a critical component of primary prevention strategies. “Drugs do not discriminate. They can affect anyone, from the brightest student to the most promising athlete. The consequences are not just personal; they ripple through families, schools, and communities. It is crucial that young people understand the harmful effects of substance abuse,” he noted, urging students to resist peer pressure and make positive decisions.
Barrister Aduke Akinboboye, the principal of Park Royal College, expressed her gratitude for the NDLEA’s efforts, calling the lecture timely and impactful. “I personally learned a lot from the presentation, and this will greatly benefit our students in making wise choices when confronted with issues of drugs,” she stated.
The event attracted students, teachers, and staff and featured comprehensive presentations by NDLEA officials, covering the health risks, legal consequences, and social impacts of drug abuse. Under the theme “Say No to Drugs: Empowering the Future,” the NDLEA team presented real-life testimonials from individuals recovering from drug use disorders, highlighting the emotional and psychological toll of substance abuse on individuals and their families.
An interactive session allowed students to ask questions, with many expressing concerns about the prevalence of drugs in their communities and seeking advice on identifying drug use. NDLEA officials provided resources and practical guidance, encouraging students to lead drug-free lives and focus on their academic goals.
This sensitisation event is part of the NDLEA’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, which aims to create awareness and foster a drug-free society. The Tin-Can Island Port Strategic Command plans to extend its outreach by conducting more lectures and workshops in schools across Lagos and beyond, reinforcing its commitment to a healthier, drug-free future for Nigeria’s youth.
