The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is set to confront the challenges posed by modern technology on Nigerian youths during the upcoming 2024 News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Press Week. The event, which will run from September 23rd to 27th at the Multi-purpose Media Centre, aims to explore the effects of technological advancements on the younger generation.
Mr. Yemi Adeleye, Assistant Secretary of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) NAN Lagos Chapel, announced the initiative in a recent statement. This year’s press week will focus on the theme, “The Role of Journalism in Addressing the Impact, Opportunities, and Challenges of Modern Technology on Youths.”
The week-long program promises a variety of activities designed to engage the public and foster community spirit. Events include a Walk for Fitness, Cultural Day celebrations, a Public Lecture, and visits to an orphanage and an elderly care home. These activities aim to highlight the role of journalism in shaping public awareness and addressing key societal challenges.
In his statement, Adeleye emphasized the critical role journalism plays in democratic societies, referring to it as a “cornerstone of democracy and a catalyst for human development.” He underscored the media’s responsibility to address societal issues, particularly the impact of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) on young people.
“This week is strategically important as it focuses on pressing global issues related to technology,” Adeleye noted, pointing to how emerging technological trends are reshaping daily life. He highlighted the need to assess both the advantages and potential risks of these technologies, especially for youths.
Adeleye also reaffirmed the union’s commitment to developmental journalism, emphasizing the importance of accurate information and warning against the dangers of fake news and sensationalism. “We acknowledge the challenges faced by journalists today, from censorship to disinformation. We stand in solidarity with journalists who courageously pursue the truth for the development of our country,” he stated.
The press week will feature notable speakers, including Dr. Segun Musa, the Chairman of the Occasion and Chief Consultant at Global Transport Policy, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer for Lagos State, and Malam Ali Mohammed Ali, Managing Director of NAN.
As the 2024 NAN Press Week approaches, both the NCC and NUJ are gearing up for insightful discussions on the intersection of technology and youth, highlighting journalism’s crucial role in navigating this evolving landscape.
