NCC Temporarily Suspends Issuance of Licences In Three Categories

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced a temporary suspension of the issuance of new licences in three key categories: Interconnect Exchange Licence, Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) Licence, and Value Added Service (VAS) Aggregator Licence. This suspension is effective immediately and aims to enable a comprehensive review of these sectors.

In a statement issued today, Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs at the NCC, explained that the suspension aligns with the Commission’s mandate under the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003. The Act empowers the NCC to grant and renew licences, promote fair competition, and develop the communications industry.

“The temporary suspension is necessary to allow the Commission to conduct a thorough review of several key areas within these categories, including the current level of competition, market saturation, and market dynamics,” Muoka stated.

Stakeholders and the general public are advised that, during the suspension period, which begins on May 17, 2024, new applications for the affected licences will not be accepted. However, pending applications will still be considered based on their merits.

For enquiries or clarifications regarding this suspension notice, stakeholders are encouraged to contact the NCC via email at licensing@ncc.gov.ng.

This move underscores the NCC’s commitment to ensuring a balanced and competitive telecommunications landscape in Nigeria.
