The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is set to build on its achievements from 2024, with a focus on enhancing transparency and service delivery in the telecommunications industry. This assurance was given by the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of the Commission, Aminu Maida, in his New Year address.
Highlighting the Commission’s plans for 2025, Maida revealed that the NCC will introduce coverage maps based on crowd-sourced data. These maps will provide users with reliable insights into the performance of Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in their respective areas.
“Towards the end of the year, we will provide coverage maps from crowd-sourced data. This is not simulated data; it is actual performance data that will show you the best network in your area. No longer will you need to ask your neighbor; you can come to the NCC website and check the data yourself,” Maida explained.
The initiative aims to empower users with accurate information and foster healthier competition among operators by encouraging transparency in service delivery.
Reflecting on the NCC’s milestones in 2024, Maida noted the successful implementation of the Federal Government’s NIN-SIM linkage policy and the designation of its infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) through a Presidential Order issued on November 6.
“The CNII designation is a significant step forward, providing immense opportunities for the digital economy and strengthening national security. It establishes a strong foundation for secure and sustainable growth in the telecommunications sector,” Maida emphasized.
Looking ahead, the EVC expressed optimism about the Commission’s goals for the new year.
“2025 holds great promise. We will build on the gains of 2024 by fostering greater transparency, driving competition, and improving service delivery among operators. These efforts are designed to enhance the user experience and propel the industry to new heights,” he stated.
The NCC’s commitment to innovation and user-focused policies underscores its role as a key driver of Nigeria’s digital economy, with plans to strengthen infrastructure, improve service quality, and ensure a secure telecommunications landscape.
