The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has granted approval for a tariff adjustment of up to 50% for telecommunications operators. This decision, which is considerably lower than the over 100% increase requested by some operators, is aimed at addressing rising operational costs while maintaining the sustainability of the telecommunications industry.
According to the NCC, the adjustments will align with tariff bands established in its 2013 Cost Study and will be implemented in line with the 2024 NCC Guidance on Tariff Simplification. Each request for adjustment will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to ensure transparency and fairness to consumers.
Telecom tariffs have remained unchanged since 2013 despite significant increases in the cost of operation. The NCC explained that the decision to approve the adjustment was necessary to bridge the widening gap between operational expenses and current tariffs. This move is also intended to ensure that service delivery is not compromised and to support operators in making continued investments in infrastructure and innovation.
The NCC noted that the decision followed extensive consultations with stakeholders from both the public and private sectors. While acknowledging the financial pressures faced by Nigerian households and businesses, the Commission reiterated its commitment to balancing the protection of consumers with the sustainability of the industry.
Telecommunications operators have been directed to implement the adjustments in a transparent manner while educating the public on the new rates. They are also required to demonstrate measurable improvements in service delivery as part of the conditions for the tariff adjustment.
The NCC emphasized its dedication to fostering a resilient, innovative, and inclusive telecommunications sector. It highlighted the importance of protecting consumers, supporting operators, and sustaining the ecosystem that includes indigenous vendors and suppliers. The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy through policies and actions designed to create a telecommunications environment that benefits everyone.
The NCC assured Nigerians that it will continue to engage with stakeholders to ensure affordability, quality service delivery, and the long-term sustainability of the industry.
