The Navy Sailing Club on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, hosted a vibrant boat race event in commemoration of the 69th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy, drawing attention to the service’s long-standing commitment to water sports and camaraderie among its personnel.

The celebration, held at the Navy Sailing Club grounds, was described as historic by Captain A.F. Adewuyi, Commander of the Club, who in his welcome address lauded the Nigerian Navy’s support and emphasized the uniqueness of the 2025 edition, being solely organized by the Navy Senate Claw.

“This event is a remarkable one in the history of the Nigerian Navy and the Navy Sailing Club,” Capt. Adewuyi remarked. He expressed appreciation to the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, for providing the logistics and resources that made the event a success.

The Commodore also appealed for further assistance from Naval Headquarters for the repair and maintenance of key club assets, including LASER boats, GP-14s, Osprey boats, and kayaks. He highlighted the need for an upgraded decking system to replace the current wooden structure, which he said demands constant upkeep.

“The Navy Senate Claw currently maintains 38 boats, but many are in need of urgent repairs. We are in dire need of a standard decking,” he said.

Rear Admiral Michael Oamen, Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, who has been a key supporter of the Senate Claw, echoed the Commodore’s appeal and pledged continued support for the club’s development.

The well-attended event featured a series of boat races and was meticulously coordinated by Rear Admiral A.O. Ogunleye and his organizing committee, in collaboration with officials from the Sailing Federation. Capt. Adewuyi commended the professionalism and sportsmanship of the sailors, describing the standard of competition as “above average.”

In a goodwill message, special guest Rear Admiral K.A. Amauche reflected on his three decades in naval service and underscored the excitement and lifelong appeal of maritime sporting activities.

As the races commenced, spectators and guests were filled with anticipation and energy. Capt. Adewuyi congratulated participants in advance and wished them success in their quest for medals.

The event not only celebrated the legacy of the Nigerian Navy at 69 but also reinforced its dedication to fostering sporting excellence and unity among its personnel.
