The Nigerian Navy showcased their sporting prowess at the Admiral Wambai Retirement Golf Tournament held at the Dolphin Golf Club in Navy Town, Ojo, Lagos. The event, which featured over 100 participants including civilians and both serving and retired naval personnel, highlighted the Navy’s commitment to recreational activities.
Lieutenant Commander Nathaniel Uti, the Naval Assistant to the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, emerged as the overall winner with a net result of 4 under par, playing on handicap 19. Rear Admiral HD Zakaria of the Naval Doctrine Command narrowly missed a podium finish, coming in fourth with a net result of 1 under par, playing off handicap 8. Retired Lieutenant Andrew Martins won in the veterans’ category.
Rear Admiral MB Hassan, Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, performed the ceremonial tee-off and emphasized the importance of golf as a recreational activity for both serving and retired naval officers. He highlighted the benefits of the sport for maintaining physical fitness and fostering camaraderie among personnel.
Admiral Wambai, the retired officer in whose honor the tournament was organized, expressed his gratitude for the event. He echoed Rear Admiral Hassan’s sentiments, underscoring the importance of sports like golf for overall well-being and fitness.
Mr. Isichei Osamgbi, skipper of the Rising Golf Club and Director at NIMASA, encouraged stakeholders in the maritime sector to engage in golf, noting that the sport provides opportunities for collaboration between various agencies and private sector involvement in maritime operations.
Dignitaries at the event included Mr. Emmanuel Maiguwa, Managing Director of BRICKS Maritime; Rear Admiral Abba; and Mr. Oluwaseun Faleye, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF). The tournament was organized by the Rising Golf Club of Nigeria in partnership with the Dolphin Golf Club, Navy Town.
Emmanuel Emogware, Competition Secretary for the Admiral Wambai Retirement Kitty, praised the participants and organizers for a successful tournament that celebrated both the sport of golf and the legacy of Admiral Wambai.
