The National Butchers Union of Nigeria has announced the formation of a 12-member caretaker committee to oversee the Lagos Branch until elections for new executive members can be conducted. The decision aims to restore peace and order following significant challenges during the tenure of the previous administration.

The appointment was communicated in a letter signed by Alhaji Biliaminu Elesinmeta, the Southwest Zonal and Kwara State Coordinator, to the Honourable Commissioner of Agriculture in Lagos State. The letter, made available to the press, detailed the expiration of the state executive committee led by Alhaji Kazeem Bamidele and the national body’s decision to establish the caretaker committee.

“I write to convey the warm wishes of the National Butchers Union of Nigeria to you and to inform you that after the expiration of the state executive committee of the Lagos chapter of our union, being headed by Alhaji Kazeem Bamidele, the national body has set up these members from the Lagos chapter to oversee the affairs of the union in the state as a caretaker committee pending the election for new executives to be conducted,” the letter stated.

The appointed members of the caretaker committee include Elder Shola Adetele as Chairman, Onifade Dauda, Olanrewaju Aremu as Secretary, Akanji Okedara, Lukmon Adeyemo, Yakubu Shehu, Wasiu Akowo, Samad, Akintoye Rasak, Taofeek Abolade, Yaro Musibau, and Arigbabuwo Kazeem.

Alhaji Elesinmeta explained that the committee was established to ensure sanity, peace, and transparency in the upcoming election. He noted that the Nigeria Police Zone 2 Command in Lagos had been informed to prevent any negative actions from the immediate past chairman or his supporters.

“The Lagos branch of the union faced numerous challenges during and after the tenure of Alhaji Bamidele Kazeem Alabi’s administration, with threats and plans by him and his followers to disrupt the Union and prevent elections,” said Alhaji Elesinmeta. “If unchecked, his actions could lead to serious crises and disputes among members of the Lagos Butchers Union.”

Alhaji Kazeem Bamidele reportedly refused to step down after his tenure, despite directives from the Union. He allegedly appointed his own committee, contrary to union rules, leading to allegations of misconduct, highhandedness, and financial misappropriation.

In response, the National Butchers Union intervened by setting up the caretaker committee to stabilize the situation, restore lost values, and conduct credible elections. Elder Shola Adetele was named the Interim Chairman, effective from July 29, 2024.

A union leader urged the Lagos State Government and the Ministry of Agriculture to address the leadership crisis by enforcing the national body’s decisions and ensuring compliance from all members. Failure to comply with directives from the National Butchers Union could result in expulsion from the Union.

The caretaker committee’s primary goal is to bring stability and progress to the Lagos State chapter of the Butchers Union through a transparent and fair election process.
