NASENI Institutes To Prioritize Internal Patronage For Technology Commercialization

The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has directed all its Development Institutes to prioritize the use of technologies and products developed within the agency. This policy, approved by NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Mr. Khalil S. Halilu, aims to strengthen collaboration, build market credibility, and enhance the commercialization of NASENI innovations.

In an internal memo dated January 31, 2024, addressed to all Acting Managing Directors and Overseeing Officers of NASENI institutes, the agency emphasized inter-institute patronage as a key strategy for driving product adoption and success in external markets. The directive mandates that the 11 Development Institutes, along with emerging ones, utilize NASENI-made technologies, machines, and equipment before offering them to the broader market.

The new policy is expected to foster greater internal confidence in NASENI products, ensuring that they are tested and refined through real-world applications before wider commercialization. Key components of the policy include:

– **Mandatory Product Integration:** Institutes must prioritize NASENI-developed products in procurement plans, including NASENI-branded laptops, where budgets allow.
– **Internal Pilots and Testing:** Each institute will conduct real-world pilot programs to gather feedback and improve product quality.
– **Inter-Institute Product Showcases:** Bi-annual exhibitions will be held for institutes to present their innovations and explore integration opportunities.
– **Cross-Institute Training:** Staff will receive training on the usage and promotion of NASENI products from other institutes.
– **Internal Endorsement and Market Credibility:** NASENI leadership will advocate for its products, enhancing their reputation for external commercialization.
– **Monitoring and Evaluation:** A structured review system will track product adoption, feedback, and areas for improvement.

According to NASENI, the expected benefits of this initiative include stronger internal product validation, improved collaboration across institutes, a structured model for external commercialization, and enhanced product development based on user feedback.

The move aligns with NASENI’s broader goal of advancing Nigeria’s technological self-sufficiency and fostering sustainable industrial growth.
