The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has lauded the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and the Honorable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, for implementing crucial safety measures aimed at reducing accidents on Nigeria’s waterways.
During a press conference in Lokoja, Kogi State, NAPS National Secretary General, Comrade Agada Noah, praised NIWA’s efforts in enforcing the Nigeria Water Transportation Code and enhancing safety through surveillance, emergency response, and patrols. He commended the training of over 300 boat operators, the distribution of thousands of life jackets, recruitment of more than 500 water marshals, and the translation of safety materials into over 40 local languages.
Noah emphasized the importance of stricter regulations, regular vessel maintenance, and penalties for non-compliance with safety standards to tackle the root causes of boat accidents. He urged the Federal Government to expedite the phasing out of wooden boats, increase NIWA’s budgetary allocations, and enforce the Nigeria Water Transportation Code to reduce mishaps.
The association called on National Assembly members from riverine areas to collaborate with water transporters and provide modern facilities, campaigns, and sensitization programs to minimize accidents. “The loss of even a single life is too many,” Noah stated, urging authorities to take proactive steps to prevent tragedies.
During their visit to NIWA’s headquarters, Managing Director Bola Oyebamiji highlighted the authority’s achievements, including nationwide sensitization campaigns, free life jacket donations, deployment of additional water marshals, and the establishment of seven search and rescue units. Oyebamiji noted that 99% of boat mishaps result from human error and a disregard for safety protocols by both operators and passengers.
The event also featured a PowerPoint presentation by Dr. Wale Tijani, Technical Adviser to the MD, and contributions from top NIWA officials, including Engr. Dakio Horsfall, GM Marine; Engr. Muhammed Dangana, GM Special Duties; and Ibrahim Sade, GM Procurement.
The meeting was attended by representatives from NAPS, including Comrade Agada Noah and Njoku Francis, alongside NIWA officials and other stakeholders committed to improving safety and security on Nigeria’s waterways.
