In a significant move to curb the activities of oil thieves and economic saboteurs, Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft under Operation Delta Safe conducted multiple air strikes on 26 July 2024, resulting in the destruction of 12 illegal refining sites and 2 reservoirs in Abia and Rivers States.
The operation began with armed reconnaissance in Umueze, Abia State, where several illegal refining sites were discovered within fenced households. This intelligence was relayed to ground troops for further action. Moving towards Owaza, NAF aircraft identified and destroyed three illegal refining sites concealed under dense vegetation.
The mission continued along the river line, leading to the discovery and subsequent destruction of nine illegal refining sites and two reservoirs in Komkom and Okoloma, Rivers State. In total, 12 illegal refining sites and 2 reservoirs were eradicated during the operation.
The presence of illegal refining sites within fenced residential areas highlights the increasing sophistication of the illegal oil refining trade. The NAF emphasizes that beyond air strikes, additional measures are required to effectively combat these illicit activities. Individuals involved in these operations, particularly those within residential zones, are reminded of the severe risks posed to human health and the environment.
Armed reconnaissance missions and the destruction of illegal refining sites will persist relentlessly until crude oil theft and economic sabotage are minimized to the lowest possible level.
