Minister Ekpo Highlights Gas As Key To Nigeria’s Energy Transition, Economic Growth

Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources will play a crucial role in the country’s energy transition, economic growth, and global positioning, according to the Honourable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo. The minister made these remarks during the 2024 Nigerian Association of Energy Correspondents (NAEC) Conference in Lagos, themed “Gas as Energy Transition Fuel: Navigating Nigeria’s Trilemma of Finance, Energy Security, and International Politics.”

In his address, Minister Ekpo emphasized the vital role of gas as a cleaner alternative to other fossil fuels, underscoring its potential to balance Nigeria’s immediate energy needs with long-term climate goals. “Natural gas offers Nigeria a pathway to address energy access challenges, power our industries, and improve the standard of living, while meeting our global commitments to reduce carbon emissions,” the minister said.

Minister Ekpo highlighted that Nigeria’s energy transition must navigate three critical factors: finance, energy security, and international politics. He acknowledged the financial challenges in the gas sector but pointed to significant progress, such as the forthcoming Gas Sales Purchase Agreement (GSPA) for the Brass Methanol Project, which will inject $3 billion into the country’s gas industry, create jobs, and stimulate industrial growth.

In terms of energy security, the minister noted key steps taken to ensure a stable energy supply for both power generation and industrial use. He also referenced recent bilateral cooperation between the United States and Nigeria, which includes technical assistance from various U.S. agencies to support methane emission reduction and clean energy initiatives.

On the international front, Minister Ekpo discussed Nigeria’s efforts to position itself as a global energy player, particularly through the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Project, which will traverse West Africa and supply gas to Europe. “This project will diversify our export routes and enhance regional energy security, fostering economic cooperation across Africa and beyond,” he added.

The minister also highlighted key achievements in the gas sector, such as the reduction of gas flaring and the expansion of gas infrastructure, including the commissioning of several gas processing plants across the country. Notable projects include the AHL and ANOH gas processing plants and the ANOH-OB3 Gas Pipeline, which will boost gas transportation capacity and support both domestic and industrial growth.

In support of cleaner energy solutions, the minister pointed to the promotion of compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as part of Nigeria’s energy transition efforts. He mentioned the launch of initiatives such as the Ride Share CNG Conversion Incentive Programme and the My CNG App, aimed at reducing transportation costs and promoting cleaner fuel options.

Minister Ekpo commended the Nigerian Association of Energy Correspondents for their role in shaping public discourse, enhancing transparency, and promoting accountability in the energy sector. He emphasized the importance of accurate and balanced reporting in informing the public and fostering dialogue on energy transition challenges and opportunities.

As Nigeria continues to navigate the complexities of energy transition, the minister called for collaboration among all stakeholders to harness the potential of natural gas, drive sustainable economic growth, and secure the country’s leadership in the global energy market.

“We must continue to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead while addressing the challenges before us. Through our collective efforts, Nigeria’s gas sector will thrive and provide a lasting legacy for future generations,” Minister Ekpo concluded.
