The Major Energy Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) has called for greater energy diversity, the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), and enhanced local refining to secure Nigeria’s energy future.

During a recent industry forum, MEMAN highlighted the need for a robust energy mix that includes traditional fuels, renewable energy sources, and innovative technologies, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to drive sustainability and reduce the nation’s reliance on imports.

MEMAN convened an industry forum on September 24, 2024, to explore Nigeria’s energy future, focusing on the importance of energy diversity, the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), and boosting local refining capabilities.

In a press statement following the event, MEMAN reaffirmed its commitment to driving innovation and sustainability in the energy sector while ensuring that Nigerian consumers benefit from a more resilient energy landscape.

At the heart of MEMAN’s message is its dedication to promoting health, safety, security, operational efficiency, transparency, and fair competition. These core values underpin the association’s approach to creating a market-driven energy sector that is both affordable and accessible. MEMAN’s efforts are aligned with national policies such as the National Petroleum Policy 2017 and the Petroleum Industry Act 2021, which prioritize energy accessibility and long-term sustainability for Nigeria.

One of the forum’s main discussions centered on the role of electric vehicles (EVs) in Nigeria’s broader energy transition. MEMAN stressed that EVs, including Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), and Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), are critical for addressing climate change, reducing carbon emissions, and strengthening energy security. While challenges such as high costs and limited charging infrastructure persist, MEMAN expressed optimism that technological advances like solid-state batteries and wireless charging would facilitate the adoption of EVs in Nigeria. The association committed to promoting the gradual transition to EVs while supporting traditional energy sources as part of the country’s energy mix.

In its strategic outlook, MEMAN called for a diverse energy mix that includes conventional fuels, renewable sources, and cutting-edge technologies. Key recommendations from the association include the formation of Petroleum Industry Consultative Committees to guide sectoral development and the promotion of private sector participation to drive efficiency and innovation. MEMAN emphasized the need for investment in infrastructure to support Nigeria’s energy growth, reduce dependence on imported fuel, and increase the country’s refining capacity. Additionally, the association highlighted the importance of education and skill development to prepare the workforce for the evolving demands of the energy sector.

Reflecting on recent accomplishments, MEMAN celebrated Nigeria’s progress in the refining sector, notably the opening of the Dangote Refinery and the development of modular refineries. These initiatives are seen as pivotal in securing Nigeria’s energy future and reducing its reliance on imported petroleum products. Although initial operational challenges are expected, MEMAN’s leadership expressed confidence in the long-term benefits these refineries will bring to the country’s energy landscape.

MEMAN also reiterated its commitment to fostering a competitive and collaborative environment within the energy industry. The association emphasized that fair competition is crucial for spurring innovation, improving operational efficiency, and ensuring that consumers have access to high-quality energy products at competitive prices. In a period of energy transition, MEMAN stressed the importance of public and private stakeholders working together to overcome challenges and ensure the sector’s growth and stability.

Looking ahead, MEMAN reaffirmed its belief in the importance of energy diversity, which includes traditional fuels, renewable energy sources like solar power, and the increasing integration of electric vehicles. This holistic approach is aimed at meeting Nigeria’s rising energy demands while minimizing environmental impacts. MEMAN expressed optimism about the future, stating that collaboration across the industry is key to achieving a sustainable and innovative energy future for Nigeria.
