Massive Police Deployment, Travel Restrictions Anticipate Rerun Elections In Two Anambra LGAs

In anticipation of the rerun elections scheduled for Saturday, February 3, 2024, in Nnewi North and Orumba North Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Anambra State, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Aderemi Adeoye, has ordered a substantial deployment of personnel to ensure the security of voters and election officials.

Following the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, the Commissioner has mandated the restriction of vehicular movement in Nanka, Orumba North LGA, and Nnewi in Nnewi North LGA from midnight to 6 p.m. on the election day. Only individuals engaged in electoral processes or essential services will be permitted free movement, provided there is evidence of duty.

The IGP has reemphasized the ban on security aides to VIPs and escorts accompanying politicians to polling booths and collation centers during the election, warning politicians to adhere to this directive for the sake of peace. State-established and private security organizations, along with quasi-security outfits, are strictly prohibited from involvement in electoral security management.

The Anambra State Police Command, in collaboration with sister agencies, assures the public of adequate security measures throughout the election period. CP Aderemi Adeoye urges voters in the affected areas to exercise their franchise without fear and warns politicians against violence, pledging firm action against any disruptors.

Residents and electorates are encouraged to be vigilant and law-abiding, promptly reporting any observed crimes or electoral offenses to law enforcement agents at polling units, the nearest police stations, or through the Command Control room numbers *07039194332* or *112* for swift response.
