The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has voiced strong objections to the ongoing delays in renewing the licenses of terminal operators at Nigeria’s seaports, citing adverse effects on port operations.
Addressing the issue at the 2024 Dockworkers Day event, organized by the Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria (SCAN) in collaboration with MWUN, President General Adewale Adeyanju expressed frustration over the protracted delay in finalizing these critical agreements.
Adeyanju urged the Federal Government to expedite the renewal process, emphasizing that the current uncertainty is creating significant operational disruptions. “We need the renewal of the terminal operators’ licenses urgently. There are considerable benefits from having responsible terminal operators. The delay in signing these agreements is troubling for our workforce,” he stated.
He also called for continued investment in training maritime workers and ensuring that terminal operators engage qualified personnel for their training programs. Furthermore, Adeyanju criticized the lack of international recognition for Maritime University Oron’s certifications, despite substantial investments.
In response, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, through the Director of Press and Public Relations Olujimi Oyetomi, assured that efforts are underway to modernize the nation’s ports. This initiative, in collaboration with the Nigerian Ports Authority, aims to address the current state of port infrastructure, enhance efficiency, and improve competitiveness globally.
Oyetola highlighted that the Federal Government is committed to creating an enabling environment by addressing infrastructural challenges and encouraging private sector involvement to maximize the maritime sector’s benefits.
SCAN President Eugene Agha remarked on the positive changes with the establishment of a separate ministry for marine and blue economy. He noted that the combined efforts of government and private stakeholders are crucial for optimizing Nigeria’s maritime resources, which are essential for the nation’s economic growth and diversification.
The event underscored the critical role dockworkers play in harnessing Nigeria’s maritime potential and highlighted the pressing need for regulatory and infrastructural improvements to support the sector’s development.
