In the bustling environment of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Chief Superintendent of Customs (CSC) Abdullahi Aliyu Maiwada stands out not only for his imposing physical presence but also for his impressive achievements in public relations. His stature—both literal and metaphorical—commands attention, merging a formidable presence with an approachable demeanor.

Maiwada’s challenge was significant: following in the footsteps of notable PR managers like Alhaji Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, the current Comptroller General of the NCS. Adeniyi significantly bolstered the public image of Customs, notably through his role in intercepting $8.07 million in smuggled cash at Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Maiwada also succeeded the unassuming Assistant Comptroller General Timi Bomodi, who excelled in the PR Unit and at the Seme border.

Under Maiwada’s leadership, the Customs PR Unit has expanded its outreach, incorporating more reputable media outlets and achieving the most positive public image among paramilitary organizations. Maiwada’s proactive approach in this role is a testament to his effectiveness and dedication.

Initially known through his thought-provoking articles, Maiwada has shown a deep commitment to supporting and elevating others in the field. Notably, he helped Neptune Prime improve its video series “The Reading of The Arbiter” by providing constructive feedback and technical support from his team. This assistance has significantly enhanced the skills of the media team and contributed to empowering a new generation of Nigerian youth.

Maiwada’s commitment to transparency and excellence was evident during a recent retreat for public relations officers. Held at the Customs TRADOC headquarters in Gwagwalada, Abuja, the three-day event included a closing ceremony that highlighted the professionalism and camaraderie within the PR Unit. This retreat, reminiscent of practices initiated by CGC Adeniyi, also featured insights from retired officers, underscoring Maiwada’s dedication to learning from the past to strengthen the service.

Throughout the retreat, I had the chance to meet ACG Timi Bomodi, now promoted and transferred to headquarters, and ASCII Joseph Okpanachi Adejoh, who impressed with his engaging personality. These interactions underscored the vibrant and collaborative spirit fostered by Maiwada’s leadership.

Maiwada, born on January 12, 1987, in Katsina State, holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, a Master’s Degree in Environmental Management, and dual Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Mass Communication. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate focused on internal communication. His extensive academic background and dedication to his role indicate he is well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
