Nurudeen Abolaji, The Chairmanship Aspirant

A local government chairmanship aspirant in Lagos State, Mr. Nurudeen Abolaji, has been accused of brutally assaulting a 79-year-old landlord, Mr. Akojede Rasaq, in the Ayobo area of the state, sparking outrage among residents and calls for justice from the victim’s family.

The incident, which occurred on April 20, 2025, at 28 Ifelodun Street, Ayobo, was reportedly triggered by a dispute over the enforcement of a 2019 environmental sanitation notice issued by the Ayobo LCDA’s Environmental Health Department. The notice had directed the property owner to abate certain environmental nuisances, including the indiscriminate discharge of wastewater and the illegal dumping of sand within the setback of the premises.

According to one of the victim’s daughters, Ayinke Akojede, her father had commenced construction of a drainage channel in compliance with the council’s directive when the situation escalated. She alleged that Mr. Abolaji—who is the Chairman of the Ifekowajo Community Development Association (CDA) and an aspirant for the chairmanship of Ipaja-Ayobo LCDA under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—alongside his associate, Azeez Jinadu (popularly known as Jegbedu of AZ Clothing), descended on the elderly man, beating him to a state of unconsciousness.

“Our father was beaten blue and black and nearly lost his life if not for the intervention of neighbors,” Ayinke told our correspondent. “One of his eyes is now badly damaged, and he’s still receiving treatment.”

Residents say the fracas broke out when the drainage construction neared the aspirant’s residence, suggesting the disagreement may have been fueled by boundary or territorial concerns.

The case was reported at the Alagolo Police Station in Ipaja, where the suspects were detained briefly but released on bail the following day. Mr. Rasaq, meanwhile, was hospitalized due to the severity of his injuries.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, noted that the case was indeed reported and handled at the Alagolo Division. However, the victim’s family has accused the police of mishandling the matter and showing bias in favor of the suspects.

“We are disappointed in how the case is being managed,” Ayinke lamented. “The suspects were released too quickly without due process, while our father is still suffering. We demand proper investigation and justice.”

The family has called on the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olorundare Moshood, to personally intervene in the matter and ensure that justice is served without fear or favor.

The incident has sparked widespread reactions in the community, with residents calling for increased accountability, especially for individuals seeking public office.
