As the world celebrates Children’s Day, the Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, has called on parents to prioritize early education on waste sorting and recycling for their children and wards. The initiative aims to foster a sustainable environment for future generations.
Dr. Gbadegesin made this appeal during LAWMA’s Children’s Day celebration held at the agency’s headquarters in Ijora-Olopa. The event featured a range of educational activities and games designed to engage children and promote awareness of environmental sustainability.
Highlighting the importance of instilling proper waste management habits in young minds, Dr. Gbadegesin emphasized the pivotal role parents play in educating their children about recycling and waste sorting. He stressed that early education on these topics is essential for nurturing environmentally responsible citizens.
“Teaching our children about recycling and proper waste management is crucial for the future of our environment. As parents, it is our responsibility to ensure they understand the impact of their actions on the planet. By integrating these lessons into their daily lives, we can raise a generation that is conscious of their environmental footprint and committed to sustainable practices,” stated Dr. Gbadegesin.
He further reiterated LAWMA’s dedication to environmental education, highlighting the agency’s involvement in various initiatives aimed at promoting waste management education in schools and communities across Lagos State. These initiatives include school outreach programs and community clean-up campaigns, reflecting LAWMA’s broader mission to cultivate a culture of environmental responsibility.
In a goodwill message, Mrs. Monsurat Banire, represented by Mrs. Olufunke Olaleye, Director of the Environmental Education Unit at the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, commended LAWMA for investing in children. She emphasized that involving children in environmental initiatives ensures a better and more sustainable future.
Mrs. Bola Adewumi, head of LAWMA Academy Training and Development, reiterated the agency’s commitment to nurturing children as ambassadors of sustainable environmental practices. She encouraged the children to maintain a positive attitude towards the environment to make it more people-friendly.
