The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has called on residents to adopt the use of smart waste bins to enhance domestic waste storage and promote a sustainable environment. This appeal was made by the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, during a demonstration of the smart bins at LAWMA headquarters in Ijora Olopa.
Dr. Gbadegesin emphasized the transformative impact of smart bins on waste management in Lagos, highlighting their advanced features that streamline waste collection by Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators.
“The smart bin has added features that improve functionality. For example, it includes an RFID chain that allows us to track when it is emptied by PSP operators. This enables us to monitor and assess their performance,” said Dr. Gbadegesin.
He explained that each smart bin is geolocated to a specific residence, ensuring that it remains associated with that address. The bins are also trackable if stolen, and can be monitored remotely from LAWMA’s control room. Additionally, these bins come with a 15-year warranty, offering residents durability and value for money.
The smart bins are color-coded to encourage waste separation and recycling, with green bins designated for general waste and blue bins for recyclables. Dr. Gbadegesin noted that residents who participate in recycling could receive incentives for their efforts.
“Getting this bin means you have now come into the new waste management system we are developing in the state,” he said. “If you want to be part of the new Lagos, you need to get this smart bin. It will help us achieve our shared goal of keeping Lagos clean.”
He also urged Lagosians to embrace the innovative waste management initiatives introduced by LAWMA, avoid indiscriminate dumping, and engage the services of assigned PSP operators.
