The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has undertaken the initiative of organizing a first-quarter health and safety training program for sanitation workers in the state. The training is designed to emphasize the health, safety, and overall well-being of the workforce involved in manual sweeping.
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, acknowledged the health hazards associated with manual sweeping and highlighted the Authority’s commitment to addressing these concerns. The comprehensive health and safety training cover essential areas such as the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure the safety of sanitation workers.
Gbadegesin expressed the importance of empowering sweepers to actively participate in their well-being, fostering a culture of safety awareness within LAWMA. He described sweepers as the “unsung heroes” who play a crucial role in keeping Lagos clean.
Beyond physical safety, the Managing Director emphasized LAWMA’s commitment by distributing LAG-ID cards to sweepers in collaboration with the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA). These cards grant access to a comprehensive healthcare plan and other essential services, contributing to a motivated and productive team.
“The LAG-ID card is a game-changer for our sweepers. It empowers them to prioritize their health, secure in the knowledge that they have access to quality care,” stated Gbadegesin. He highlighted that the cards would also provide access to financial services such as loans.
In tandem with the training initiative, LAWMA has introduced additional mechanized sweeping machines at strategic locations throughout the state. This modernization effort aims to enhance operational efficiency, reduce physical demands on sweepers, and contribute to a cleaner environment.
Dr. Gbadegesin assured that the introduction of mechanized sweeping would not result in job losses for sweepers, emphasizing the Authority’s commitment to a technology-driven approach that prioritizes both productivity and a clean environment.
As part of a plea to the public, especially motorists, the Managing Director urged caution on the roads, particularly with the onset of the rainy season, and encouraged everyone to refrain from littering for a cleaner and healthier Lagos.
