LAWMA, LASRRA Collaborate To Empower Sweepers With Lag ID Cards

In a groundbreaking partnership, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) joined forces with the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) to distribute LAG ID cards to over 2,000 sweepers. The event, held at LAWMA headquarters in Ijora Olopa, marked a significant step towards enhancing the lives and well-being of sanitation workers in the state.

The initiative follows a meticulous data capturing exercise, culminating in the distribution and activation of the ID cards. Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, emphasizing the transformative potential for sweepers’ daily activities and financial transactions.

Dr. Gbadegesin highlighted the multifaceted benefits of the LASRRA cards, stating, “These cards serve as a legitimate form of identification, empowering sweepers in their daily interactions and fostering a sense of belonging within the community. Beyond identification, the cards unlock access to crucial healthcare services and opportunities for applying for loans.”

The LASRRA cards were described as a key to essential healthcare services, ensuring the well-being of sweepers engaged in demanding work. Additionally, the cards open doors to economic opportunities by facilitating access to financial services and business loans.

Mrs. Bilikis Abiola, the General Manager of LASRRA, emphasized the unique database created through this initiative, enabling LAWMA to manage and support sanitation workers more effectively. The cards not only serve as identification but also cover health insurance, ensuring that all LAWMA sweepers have access to affordable and free healthcare services.

Seyi Olanrewaju, Team Lead at Sterling Bank, explained the financial aspects of the initiative, describing LASRRA cards as providing access to services like BRT, loans, and various financial benefits. He highlighted the functionality of the card, akin to an ATM card, with an automatic wallet account opening upon receiving the card.

The distribution and activation of the cards marked the high point of the event, as sweepers gained access to these transformative tools. The partnership between LAWMA and LASRRA underscores a commitment to empowering sanitation workers and fostering a cleaner, healthier Lagos.
