LAWMA Hosts Third Ramadan Public Lecture, Emphasizes Economic Empowerment, Environmental Responsibility

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) marked another milestone in its commitment to religious inclusiveness and community engagement with the successful hosting of its annual Ramadan Public Lecture. Held at LAWMA’s headquarters in Ijora-Olopa, the event gathered Muslim faithful from within the agency and the Otto community for a day of spiritual enrichment and reflection.

In his welcome address, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, represented by the Executive Director, Finance, Mr. Kunle Adebiyi, reiterated the agency’s dedication to promoting religious harmony and unity. He emphasized the significance of the Ramadan public lecture in fostering bonds among Muslim communities within LAWMA and the Otto community.

Addressing the theme, “Using Islamic Principles to Improve Nigeria’s Economic Crisis; Role of Citizens,” Gbadegesin highlighted the importance of incorporating Islamic values into economic practices. He underscored the role of citizens in contributing to the nation’s development and urged attendees to embrace self-discipline, self-control, and empathy for the needy, while also emphasizing the importance of environmental stewardship.

The guest lecturer, Sheikh Abdul Rahman Ahmad, National Missioner of Ansarudeen Society of Nigeria, delivered an enlightening discourse on economic empowerment and ethical consumption. He emphasized the significance of zakat principles in fostering economic equity and called for investment in real assets and interest-free finance within the structured banking system.

Sheikh Ahmad also addressed issues related to fair trade practices, urging businesses and traders to refrain from unreasonable price hikes and excessive spending. He commended the Lagos State Government’s efforts in food distribution initiatives and called for enhanced strategies to address poverty and hunger.

The event received commendations from notable dignitaries, including the Oba of Lagos, Oba Riliwan Akiolu, represented by the Olorogun Agbeje of Lagos, Chief Waheed Yusuf, and the Managing Director of LOTUS Bank, Alhaja Kafilat Yusuf, represented by the Chief Digital Officer, Mr. Abdul Wasiu Popoola. They lauded LAWMA for organizing a spiritual event that promotes unity and love within the community.

Also in attendance were the Oloto of Otto, Oba Bashir Abisoye Odesanya, members of the Lagos White Cap Chiefs, top management staff of LAWMA, and Chief Imams in the Otto community, among others.

The event, which took place on the 13th of March 2024, served as a testament to LAWMA’s commitment to fostering religious inclusiveness, community partnership, and environmental responsibility.
