The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and Green VET Africa, in collaboration with the European Union, have hosted their first Youth Empowerment Workshop focused on green skills and sustainable waste management. The event, held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) in Ikeja, brought together young participants from Nigeria and Ghana to explore opportunities in waste management and entrepreneurship.
LAWMA’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, represented by Executive Director Mr. Kunle Adebiyi, highlighted the authority’s dedication to a circular economy where waste is treated as a valuable resource. Gbadegesin stressed the importance of sustainable waste management practices in maintaining a clean and thriving environment.
“This workshop aims to bridge the knowledge gap in waste management and expose participants to technological innovations that can be leveraged for entrepreneurial success,” Gbadegesin noted.
The Green VET Africa initiative, co-founded by Margerita Treslini, was created to address the underdevelopment of vocational training in waste management in both Europe and Africa. Treslini emphasized the collaborative efforts between Spain, Ghana, and Nigeria in developing training programs that equip youths with essential skills.
LAWMA’s Project Director for Green VET Africa, Mrs. Ademola Elizabeth, explained that the initiative aligns with the European Green Deal’s environmental goals. Over 100 participants from Lagos and Kumasi have been trained in green waste management and micro-entrepreneurship, boosting their employability and preparing them for future entrepreneurial ventures.
Breakout sessions, presentations, and feedback sessions were held, focusing on the challenges and opportunities in the recycling sector. Stakeholders from various green waste management companies shared their experiences to inspire the participants.
Notable attendees included Polysmart Group Managing Director Wasiu Balogun, CEO of HygienePlus Abdul Ganiy Oyekunle, and representatives from the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAMN) and Lagos Recyclers Association.
