As part of the ongoing community sanitation and advocacy campaign initiated by the Lagos State Government, the 34th set of LAWMA Academy interns, also known as Team Eco Resilience, sensitized residents of the Otto Community in Lagos Mainland on the importance of proper waste management.

Addressing the community, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, represented by the Executive Director, Mr. Kunle Adebiyi, emphasized the collective responsibility of maintaining a clean environment. He urged residents to adopt personal hygiene and proper waste disposal practices to prevent disease spread.

“The task of ensuring a clean environment is not LAWMA’s alone, but a collective responsibility. Residents should get covered bins for their waste to avoid the spread of diseases,” Adebiyi stated.

Dr. Gbadegesin also encouraged the youth of Otto Community to join LAWMA Academy as interns. “When graduate youths from the community register as interns, they can spread awareness about what they have learned. Various opportunities now exist in waste management. To benefit, we must open our eyes to the possibilities around us,” he noted.

The Chairman of the Community Development Association (CDA) of Otto and the Community Development Committee (CDC) of Lagos Mainland Local Government, Saloko Muiz Babatunde, called on residents to participate in the weekly clean-up exercises organized by the community. He warned that those who failed to participate would face sanctions.

Supporting the initiative, Prince Fuhad Oloto, representative of the Oloto of Otto Community, and Honourable Akeem Esuru-osho, chief of staff to Oloto, pledged their support for LAWMA and compliance with environmental regulations.

In a related development, traders at United Amu Market have begun cleaning their business premises, responding to the sanitation awareness effort at Alamutu Market, Idi-Oro, led by officials of the Lagos State Government.

Commending the traders, Dr. Gbadegesin remarked, “Achieving the clean and livable city of our dreams requires everyone to play their part. We cannot afford to let the beauty of the state erode due to indiscriminate refuse dumping and nonchalant attitudes. The environment is ours to cherish and preserve. Let’s keep Lagos clean.”

Last Sunday, officials from the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources and LAWMA, including Dr. Gbadegesin, visited Alamutu Market for a comprehensive community-based sanitation and sensitization exercise.
