The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Academy has successfully wrapped up its 2024 summer school program, a four-week initiative aimed at educating pupils on effective waste management and recycling practices. The program, held at LAWMA’s headquarters in Ijora-Olopa, attracted participants from various schools across Lagos State.

During the closing ceremony, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, represented by Mr. Kunle Adebiyi, Executive Director of Finance, expressed his satisfaction with the students’ performance throughout the program. He encouraged them to apply their newfound knowledge in their daily lives, stressing the importance of proper waste sorting and recycling.

“I am thrilled with your performance during this training,” Mr. Adebiyi said. “I urge you to go out there and share what you have learned with others. You must put these lessons into practice by properly sorting your waste and utilizing recycling materials to create useful items.”

He further emphasized the role of the pupils as ambassadors for waste management, reminding them of their new responsibility to promote good waste practices wherever they go.

Mrs. Bola Adewumi, Head of LAWMA Academy, also addressed the participants, urging them to use their knowledge to promote sustainable living within their communities.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of awards to outstanding students in both the primary and secondary categories. Additionally, the LAWMA Academy’s August interns, named the Sustainable Solution Squad (SSS), showcased their projects and innovations, demonstrating a deep understanding of waste management concepts and their potential to influence positive change in their communities.

The summer school curriculum was comprehensive, covering topics such as waste segregation, recycling techniques, and the environmental impact of proper waste management. The program also included hands-on activities and practical sessions, equipping the participants with a solid foundation in sustainable waste practices.

The success of this year’s summer school underscores LAWMA Academy’s commitment to empowering the younger generation with the knowledge and skills needed to champion environmental sustainability in Lagos and beyond.
