The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority LASTMA has been made aware of the above-captioned news item that was published by and is currently trending on a website (@SamzyVG & @ToyosiGodwin) today, Tuesday, August 29, 2023.
According to a statement made by the Director of LASTMA’s Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, the events that occurred today at the MRS Filling Station on Kodesoh Road in Ikeja were not exactly as reported by online media.
An initial investigation revealed that a mini commercial bus (korope) driver drove recklessly after spotting a LASTMA Patrol Van in front of MRS Filling Station waiting to fill up, and a passenger sitting by the open door fell from the ‘Korope’, suffering only minor injuries. She was rushed to LASUTH for treatment.
Further investigation revealed that the woman was not actually dead as initially believed but rather had just suffered minor wounds that were eventually treated at LASUTH.
“The statement that a pregnant woman was crushed to death by a LASTMA Van during a ‘Korope’ chase was not true as she was confirmed not to be pregnant before discharged from LASUTH with her husband.
The incident was reported right away to the Area “F” Divisional Police Station for additional investigation.
In light of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform (2018), the Management of LASTMA urged all commercial bus operators to always protect the safety of their passengers by keeping their vehicle doors closed while in motion.
