The Lagos State Government has urged residents to report any housing agent who demands more than 10 percent agency fees, reiterating its commitment to fair housing practices and enforcement of rental regulations in the state.
This charge was made on Tuesday during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja. Speaking during the session, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing, Barr. Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, emphasised the importance of maintaining legal standards in housing transactions across Lagos.
“No agent in Lagos is allowed to collect more than 10 percent as commission. Anyone who does should be reported to the Ministry of Housing immediately,” she warned. “It is often the assistant agents that make housing more expensive. We have engaged them multiple times to comply with the approved rate.”
Odunuga-Bakare also advised tenants to formally notify their landlords before vacating any rented apartment, as stipulated by tenancy laws in the state.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has revealed that it has delivered 9,970 housing units in the last six years, with projections to increase the figure to 14,022 by the end of the current administration in 2027.
Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, disclosed this while presenting the Ministry’s scorecard at the ongoing Ministerial Press Briefing marking the second year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term.
He noted that the state’s housing strategy, guided by the THEMES+ development agenda, focuses on low- and middle-income earners through a combination of direct government investment and Public Private Partnerships (PPPs).
“In specific terms, Lagos has implemented a range of laudable initiatives to tackle the affordable housing challenge. These include streamlined approval processes for developers, tax incentives, and supportive policies to encourage the delivery of homes,” he said.
Highlighting the administration’s achievements, the Commissioner said the Sanwo-Olu-led government has completed 21 housing estates across Lagos since 2019. Of the 9,970 homes delivered so far, 3,994 were built through direct government funding, while 5,976 were provided through PPP arrangements.
Recent additions include the Egan-Igando Mixed Housing Estate (Cluster 1), commissioned in June 2024, which added 270 two-bedroom apartments to the state’s housing stock.
The Commissioner further noted that construction is ongoing at 20 housing schemes, including:
* **Egan-Igando Clusters II & III**: 576 units expected by Q1 2026
* **LagosHOMS Sangotedo Phase 2**: 528 units expected by Q3 2025
* **Epe Housing Scheme (Itamarun)**: 112 units expected by Q4 2025
* **LagosHOMS Ajara, Badagry**: 420 units with ongoing construction
Akinderu-Fatai added that the Ministry is working to complete these projects before the end of 2025.
As part of the government’s social intervention efforts, 129 housing units have also been allocated to teachers across various educational districts, following the directive of Governor Sanwo-Olu.
Commending the Governor for his support, the Commissioner stated: “Mr. Governor’s dedication to the housing sector has earned him national recognition and we are confident that his legacy in this area will remain a shining example of impactful governance.”
He also expressed appreciation to Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and the Lagos State House of Assembly for their consistent support in driving the state’s housing agenda.
