The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olorundare Jimoh, has described the media as a vital partner in the state’s security framework. He made this statement on Friday during a visit to the Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN) at its monthly congress held at the I-GP Mike Okiro Press Centre, GRA Ikeja.
Addressing crime reporters, Jimoh acknowledged their unique role in covering security-related events, including riots, police operations, and other high-risk situations, often without protective gear. He emphasized that journalists in this field are not just observers but crucial allies in crime prevention and public safety.
“I seek more collaboration with you. I am not saying you should avoid reporting negative stories about the command, but I urge you to always hear our side before going to the press. I will not fight anyone for reporting the truth, as long as our perspective is also considered. The same journalist who writes a critical story today may write a positive one tomorrow,” Jimoh said.
He assured the association that both his office and that of the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) remain open for engagement, encouraging a balanced approach to crime reporting.
In response, CRAN President, Olalekan Olabulor, represented by the association’s Vice President, Evelyn Usman, appreciated the CP’s visit and reiterated the longstanding partnership between Jimoh and CRAN, dating back to his tenure as the Force spokesperson.
Olabulor assured the commissioner of the association’s continued support but urged him to respond promptly to journalists’ inquiries to prevent the spread of unverified information. He also cautioned the CP about individuals falsely claiming to be CRAN members, advising him to verify such cases with the association’s leadership when in doubt.
The visit underscored the importance of police-media collaboration in enhancing security awareness and accurate crime reporting in Lagos.
