The vibrant cultural tapestry of Lagos State was on full display at Kulturefest 2024, as the annual festival celebrated its 25th anniversary with an array of performances and the recognition of individuals who have significantly contributed to youth development, arts, and culture.
Comrade Israel Bolaji, widely known as Bashorun, Founder of Skills Over Substances And Paradigm Shift (SOSAP) Alliance, was among the honorees, receiving the Heritage Champion Award. Recognized for over a decade of impactful advocacy, Bolaji’s contributions to youth mentorship, cultural promotion, and education were celebrated during the festival, which was organized by the Alimosho Arts Community Initiatives (AACI) and Theatre Centrik in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Arts, Tourism, and Culture.
Through SOSAP Alliance, Bolaji has mentored youths in acquiring technology skills and fostering positive mindsets while advocating against drug abuse and illegal substances. Reflecting on his achievement, Bolaji expressed gratitude, calling the recognition a testament to the value of collective efforts in youth and cultural development.
Other notable awardees included the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University and King Joshua Godson Abiodun, further underscoring the festival’s theme of honoring individuals committed to cultural excellence and societal growth.
The Lagos Commissioner for Tourism, Toke Benson Awoyinka, commended the festival for celebrating the state’s vibrant cultural heritage and its champions. High Chief Dr. Obani Oluwabiyi Anthony Boyede Greenlyte, founder of AACI, remarked on the importance of honoring cultural icons, describing the festival as a platform to spotlight Lagos’ rich traditions and achievements.
The 19th edition of Kulturefest featured a dazzling array of cultural displays, including theatre, dance, music, and drama, as well as traditional performances by groups such as Obatala, Egungun, and Sango. Highlights included the poetry piece “Unbroken Spirit: A Call to Rise Above,” performed by Omowunmi Patience Boyede, and the play “Omi Sayo,” written by Dr. Greenlyte and directed by Mr. Thomas Ogaga Obrutu.
Chief Dr. Greenlyte expressed gratitude to all attendees, performers, and supporters, describing the 2024 Kulturefest as a milestone event that showcased Lagos’ cultural diversity while emphasizing sustainability. “We are thrilled with the success of Lagos Kulturefest 2024,” he said, “and we look forward to building on this success in future editions.”
The festival concluded with widespread acclaim, drawing culture enthusiasts, traditional rulers, and community leaders who united in celebrating the heritage and creativity of Lagos State.
