Kenneth Jukpor, Publisher of News Diet online and quarterly magazine, has earned a Master’s degree in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

Jukpor, who also serves as the Secretary of the Media and Publicity Committee for the Nigerian Ports Consultative Council (NPCC) and the National Media Officer for Youngship Nigeria, was among the graduates celebrated at UNILAG’s 55th Convocation Ceremony last week.

Reflecting on his academic journey, Jukpor expressed gratitude for completing the rigorous 18-month program, which was extended to over three years due to multiple strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

“It wasn’t always smooth juggling journalism in Lagos from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and attending lectures from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., but I can now say the challenges sharpened me,” he said.

One memorable highlight of his studies was a group assignment on Community Journalism, which led to a visit to the Alabarago lepers colony in Lagos. This community houses over 2,000 people, including leprosy survivors and their families, who live in dire conditions with limited access to education, sanitation, clean water, and proper nutrition.

“As the team lead, I inspired my group to develop impactful reports on the plight of the community,” Jukpor explained. “Our stories were featured in four national dailies and 15 news blogs, drawing attention from non-profits and multinationals, which have since provided assistance to the community.”

Another group assignment resulted in an advertising campaign, New Nigeria, New Me, which produced radio jingles, billboards, and TV commercials used by organizations like the Nigerian Police Force and Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

Jukpor’s academic work also included a research project titled Perception and Public Relations Practices of Nigeria Customs Service at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos. His findings revealed challenges such as bribery, poor public relations, and inadequate equipment affecting the NCS’s image and operations.

“The NCS needs to enhance visibility across all channels, enforce anti-bribery measures, and acquire modern equipment. I also recommended frequent staff training on discipline and public relations to improve service delivery,” he stated.

Jukpor’s achievement underscores his dedication to excellence in journalism and public relations, as well as his commitment to addressing societal issues through impactful storytelling and research.
