In the early hours of September 3, 2024, a joint operation led by the Police, along with the Army, Navy, Civil Defence, and other security agencies, launched a swift response to an armed attack on the Oba Police Divisional Headquarters and the Oba Civic Center.
The attack, reportedly carried out by a suspected armed secessionist group, began with the assailants firing sporadically in an attempt to gain access to the police station. The attackers also threw petrol bombs at the security facility, setting several offices on fire, including parts of the Oba Civic Center.
Tragically, a police corporal who was on duty sustained fatal injuries during the attack and ultimately lost his life. Despite the onslaught, the fire was quickly extinguished with the help of other police officers and the rapid response from the Joint Security Force.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, condemned the violent act, describing it as an attack on the soul of the nation. He vowed that those responsible for the “unholy act” would be brought to justice.
The Anambra State Police Command has since intensified its efforts to track down the perpetrators and ensure the safety of the community.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer for Anambra State, confirmed the incident in a statement released on September 3, 2024.
