Joint Security Forces Recover 5 Explosives As Manhunt For Attackers of Umunze Police Station Intensifies

In the early hours of Monday, September 16, 2024, a coordinated attack was launched on the Umunze Police Station by suspected members of an armed proscribed group. The assailants stormed the facility armed with improvised explosives and firearms, setting part of the station on fire during the attack.

In response, Joint Security Forces comprising the Police, Army, Navy, Civil Defence, and other agencies, quickly mobilized to contain the situation. They were able to recover five unexploded improvised explosives from the scene of the attack.

Tragically, two police operatives who were on duty during the attack lost their lives in a valiant effort to resist the assailants and prevent further damage. Their bodies have been recovered and taken to the morgue, while their colleagues continue to search for the perpetrators.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, visited the scene of the attack to conduct an on-the-spot assessment. In a statement, CP Itam assured the public that security in the area has been reinforced, and a clearance operation is currently underway in identified criminal camps.

The Commissioner urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward, assuring them that such information will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.

According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer for Anambra State, the situation remains under control, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the culprits behind the attack.

The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and security in the area.
