The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a stern warning against the dissemination of fake news and cyberbullying, emphasizing the severe consequences for those involved. The Force strongly condemns the malicious spread of old content and misinformation designed to undermine public trust in law enforcement.
In a press release, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, highlighted that the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act, 2015, and other applicable laws criminalize fake news and cyberbullying. These activities not only endanger the reputation of the Force but also have the potential to sow fear and discord within the country.
The NPF views these actions as a direct threat to societal stability and safety, vowing to take decisive action against individuals or groups responsible for such activities. In response to the concerning trend, the NPF is intensifying efforts to combat fake news and cyberbullying. The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has directed the National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) to clamp down on those jeopardizing national security through misinformation.
The IGP’s directive includes prosecuting perpetrators to the fullest extent of the law. The NPF pledges collaboration with relevant authorities to ensure swift and appropriate legal action against offenders.
The public is urged to exercise caution and discernment when consuming and sharing information online. The NPF emphasizes the collective responsibility of citizens to stand united against misinformation and cyberbullying, recognizing that the safety and well-being of the country depend on upholding truth and integrity.
Citizens are encouraged to report instances of fake news or cyberbullying promptly, and the Police assure a swift and thorough investigation to address these issues.
