Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, alongside other prominent Nigerians, has underscored the vital role of the Nigerian military in safeguarding the nation’s unity and democratic values. Speaking at the launch of “Nine Lives: The Bello-Fadile Memoirs” in Abuja, Abdulsalami praised the military’s stabilizing influence and called on Nigerian youths to adopt a spirit of service and commitment to nation-building.
The book, authored by Col. Bello Fadile (Rtd), recounts his experiences during the turbulent period of the alleged 1995 “phantom coup” under General Sani Abacha’s regime. Abdulsalami lauded Fadile for his patriotism, resilience, and dedication to democracy, describing him as an exemplary figure for young Nigerians.
“Youths have a critical role in nation-building,” Abdulsalami remarked. “Fadile’s unwavering commitment, even in the face of trials, shows how service, whether in the military, public office, or civil society, strengthens our nation.”
He commended the sacrifices of Nigerian soldiers, emphasizing the importance of national service and unity during times of internal and external challenges. Abdulsalami also praised Fadile’s intellectual pursuit, describing him as a role model and brilliant lawyer.
Representing former President Ibrahim Babangida, Aisha Babangida highlighted Fadile’s resilience and bravery during the trials of his imprisonment. “Bello Fadile remained undaunted and consistent, embodying resilience and intellectual brilliance,” she said.
The book’s reviewer, Prof. Agbo Madaki, shed light on its revelations, which challenge earlier narratives of the 1995 coup branded as a “phantom coup” by the media. He praised Fadile’s vivid storytelling and poetic skill, noting that the book offers valuable insights into Nigeria’s history and lessons in perseverance. Madaki urged the Nigerian military to move beyond practices associated with military regimes, such as human rights abuses and disregard for the rule of law, and instead focus on safeguarding peace and democracy.
Col. Bello Fadile expressed gratitude to participants and recounted his struggles and triumphs during his years of service. He acknowledged the support of attendees, despite their busy schedules, and shared his hope that the book would inspire resilience and faith in adversity.
The event featured goodwill messages from notable dignitaries, including former Senate President David Mark, Senator Ndoma Egba, former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation Kano Agabi, former Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Luther Martin Agwai, and former National Security Adviser Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd).
“Nine Lives” is seen as an essential read for students of history and governance, offering a detailed account of significant moments in Nigeria’s past while inspiring readers to remain steadfast in the face of trials.
