IMOKA FESTIVAL: Anambra Police Raid Black Spots In Awka, Arrest Suspect, Recover Arms

As part of heightened efforts to ensure a crime-free Imoka Festival celebration, the Anambra State Police Command has intensified operations in Awka and its environs, targeting known black spots used by suspected criminals.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command disclosed that it had acted on credible intelligence indicating that certain individuals were taking advantage of the festivities to engage in criminal activities, harass residents, and threaten public safety.

The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) attached to the Awka sector, in a late-night operation on May 19, 2025, arrested a 25-year-old suspect identified as Nasiru Samaila. During the raid, the police recovered a locally made Beretta pistol, one live round of ammunition, a knife, and a large quantity of substances suspected to be hard drugs.

According to the police, the suspect attempted to evade arrest by firing shots indiscriminately. However, he was overpowered by the operatives, who shot him in the right leg to subdue him. One police officer sustained a gunshot injury during the confrontation and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility.

The Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order during the cultural celebration and warned that it would not tolerate any form of lawlessness under the guise of festivities.

Further updates on the investigation and additional security measures will be provided as operations continue. The Command also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.
