The International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION) today officially commenced its Executive Course on Maritime Security and Global Trade at the IMION Auditorium, NNS QUORRA, Apapa, Lagos, with key maritime stakeholders in attendance.
The two-day executive course brings together experts and participants from the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Customs Service, Institute of Transport and Management Technology, and the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria, among others.
In his welcome address, Executive Director of Administration, Commodore Isa Abubakar Ahmed, described the course as a strategic initiative designed to enhance maritime governance, capacity building, and stakeholder collaboration in line with the institute’s mandate.
“Unlocking the Blue Economy’s full potentials requires a strategic, sustainable approach built on research, collaboration, and public-private partnerships,” he said. “Together, we can build a future where maritime security is not only a shared responsibility but also a shared success.”
Also speaking at the opening ceremony, Director General of IMION, Rear Admiral TC Udofia (Rtd), emphasized the critical role maritime security plays in shaping global trade and the Nigerian economy. He noted that with over 80 percent of global trade carried by sea, securing maritime routes has become more essential than ever.
“This Executive Course aligns with the vision of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral EI Ogalla, and the sustainable development agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he stated. “As the ocean faces increasing pressures from population growth and climate change, this initiative aims to equip stakeholders with the tools to respond effectively.”
Rear Admiral Udofia explained that participants would explore key modules, including threats to maritime security, regulatory frameworks, the impact of insecurity on logistics, and modern security technologies. The training will also incorporate case studies and solution-driven group sessions.
He further lauded the establishment of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, noting that Nigeria is strategically positioned to benefit from the vast economic opportunities embedded in ocean resources.
“This course is not merely a collection of lectures; it is a catalyst for action. It offers a platform for innovation and sustainable strategies to transform Nigeria’s maritime sector,” he concluded.
The event was attended by top naval officers, including Rear Admiral Daniel Atakpa, Director of Operations, Naval Headquarters. Other dignitaries, sector leaders, and maritime professionals were also present to lend their voices to the importance of a secure and prosperous ocean economy.
The Executive Course continues tomorrow with interactive sessions aimed at shaping future policies and collaborative frameworks for maritime safety and trade development.
