In a triumphant revelation, the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) under the command of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, has delivered unprecedented outcomes within a mere two weeks of its launch in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The swift and impactful operations led to the arrest of 139 suspects, the safe rescue of 154 kidnapped victims, and the recovery of a substantial arsenal, including 17 arms and 604 ammunitions. Among the seized weapons were 3 GPR Chargers, 2 AK-47 rifles, 1 Type-06, 4 locally fabricated guns, 1 Beretta pistol, 2 Makarov pistols, and 4 locally fabricated pump-action guns.
A notable achievement includes the interception of a group along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway identified as major suppliers of arms and ammunition to bandits operating in Niger, Zamfara, and Kaduna States. Additionally, in a recent encounter on January 26, 2024, IGP-SIS operatives engaged armed bandits along the FCT-Kaduna axis, resulting in the neutralization of 3, including the gang leader, Mai-Gemu (aka Gadoro), effectively dismantling the gang and its camp.
Earlier, on January 21, 2024, IGP-SIS operatives arrested two significant gun-running kingpins supplying locally fabricated arms and various types of ammunition to assailants in the North-Central region. The squad also successfully apprehended two kidnappers in the Jikwoyi area of the FCT, recovering arms and ammunition after overpowering the gang in a gun battle that led to the safe rescue of a kidnapped victim.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, emphasized the resounding success of the SIS launch and reaffirmed the commitment to extend its operations beyond the FCT to other states, fortifying comprehensive security management. In furtherance of this commitment, the IGP has directed the tactical deployment of numerous operatives to areas within the FCT still grappling with security breaches, aiming to combat criminality effectively.
