The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a directive for the extensive deployment and enforcement of movement restrictions during the 2024 run-off and bye-elections in 26 states on February 3, 2024. Vehicular movement will be restricted from 12 a.m. to 6 p.m., excluding essential services. Notably, VIP aides, escorts, and state security outfits are prohibited from accompanying principals and politicians to polling booths, emphasizing the need for a fair electoral process.

The IGP underscores these measures as vital to prevent interference and intimidation during the elections, prioritizing the integrity of the electoral process. Political parties and supporters are urged to adhere to electoral laws, with any attempts to disrupt the process met with legal consequences.

To ensure a secure and democratic society, citizens are encouraged to report suspicious activities to the provided contact numbers and email addresses. The IGP expresses confidence that collective efforts will lead to peaceful, transparent elections in line with democratic principles.

The IGP also strongly condemns the recent killing of traditional rulers in Ekiti State and the abduction of school pupils and teachers in Emure-Ekiti. Immediate steps have been taken to address these security challenges, including the deployment of AIG Abiodun Asabi to Zone 17 Akure, along with additional personnel and assets.

The newly posted AIG is tasked with coordinating a comprehensive security response to restore peace and order in Ekiti and parts of Ondo State. Preliminary investigations have led to the arrest of thirteen suspects, emphasizing the commitment of the NPF to ensuring justice and holding perpetrators accountable.

The IGP extends condolences to the affected communities and assures the public of the NPF’s dedication to apprehending the culprits and preventing a recurrence. Citizens are urged to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative with the Police and other security agencies as efforts are made to restore peace to the affected areas.
