IGP Egbetokun Intensifies Fight Against Crime, Strengthens Police Welfare

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has reinforced the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to combating violent crimes, including armed robbery, kidnapping, and cybercrime, while also prioritizing the welfare of officers.

Since assuming office, Egbetokun has intensified efforts to enhance security operations, leading to the arrest of 30,313 suspects in 2024 alone for offenses such as kidnapping, cultism, murder, rape, and unlawful possession of firearms. Additionally, the police recovered 1,984 assorted firearms, 23,250 rounds of ammunition, and 1,438 stolen vehicles while rescuing 1,581 kidnapped victims.

One of the significant successes under his leadership was the June 30, 2024 rescue of one Nigerian and three Indian nationals in Ogun State. Despite an ambush by kidnappers, the victims were safely rescued, with two of the criminals neutralized in a follow-up raid.

Beyond tackling violent crimes, the police have also intensified their efforts against cybercrime. In November 2024, detectives uncovered a major fraud operation, recovering N3.9 billion and arresting 130 suspects, including 113 foreign nationals, involved in a global cybercrime network.

Recognizing the challenges of policing in Nigeria, Egbetokun has acknowledged the dangers officers face daily. The abduction and killing of six police personnel during a special operation in Delta State on February 26, 2024, underscored the hazards law enforcement officers encounter in their mission to secure the country.

In addition to crime-fighting, the IGP has prioritized police welfare. The launch of the Nigeria Police Insurance Company aims to improve officers’ insurance and welfare packages. Over N12 billion in insurance payouts have been distributed to 4,223 beneficiaries under the NPF Group Life Insurance Scheme. Widows of fallen officers have also continued to receive financial support.

Egbetokun’s leadership approach emphasizes merit-based appointments, placing officers in key positions based on their competence and efficiency rather than tribal considerations. His strategic deployment of officers has been instrumental in strengthening security operations nationwide.

With continued focus on proactive crime prevention and officer welfare, IGP Egbetokun’s tenure is set to redefine policing in Nigeria, enhancing both security and public confidence in law enforcement.
