IGP Appoints New Commander For Petroleum Task Force Amid Rising Oil Theft Concerns

In efforts to intensify the fight against pipeline vandalism and oil theft, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has appointed Deputy Commissioner of Police Bayonle Kafar Sulaiman as the new Commanding Officer of the Inspector-General of Police Special Task Force on Petroleum And Illegal Bunkering (IGP-STFPIB).

DCP Bayonle Kafar Sulaiman, renowned for his leadership in previous task force operations, notably as Squadron Commander of Police Mobile Force 20 in Lagos, assumes responsibility for leading efforts to combat illegal activities within the petroleum industry. His mandate includes cracking down on oil theft, illegal bunkering, and pipeline vandalism.

Expressing deep concern over the detrimental impact of these activities on Nigeria’s economy, environment, and energy security, the IGP emphasized the need for decisive action. He underscored the significant financial losses and environmental degradation caused by oil theft and vandalism, including oil spills and pollution.

The IGP directed DCP Bayonle Kafar Sulaiman to enforce stringent measures and prosecute all individuals involved in economic sabotage within Nigeria’s oil sector. He urged collaboration among stakeholders in the oil industry and the public to provide credible intelligence that can aid in preempting and exposing criminal activities.

In conclusion, the IGP reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to safeguarding national resources and ensuring the security of critical infrastructure, calling for collective efforts to combat oil theft and related crimes effectively.
