House of Reps Investigates Renewable Energy Investments, Calls For Market-Based Approach

The House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy has launched an investigative hearing to assess the effectiveness of government investments and grants allocated for renewable energy development since 2015. The committee emphasized the need for a competitive procurement scheme to drive a market-based approach in renewable energy generation.

Chairman of the committee, Hon. Victor Ogene, opened the two-day hearing by urging stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of renewable energy policies. He highlighted that, despite investments exceeding $2 billion in the past decade, the sector has seen limited improvement. Ogene stressed the importance of integrity, transparency, and objectivity in managing government resources, underscoring the committee’s commitment to accountability in the use of public funds and international investments.

Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abass, addressed the session, acknowledging Nigeria’s success in attracting substantial domestic and international funding for renewable energy since 2015. He noted the challenges in energy diversification and emphasized the complexity of achieving sustainable growth through energy reforms. Abass commended the committee’s dedication to ensuring transparency in the sector and encouraged all representatives from Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and other stakeholders to engage honestly in the review process.

Adding to the discussions, Prof. Magnus Onuoha, Chairman of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Association of Nigeria (REEEA-A), represented by Anita Adeyemi, expressed the association’s willingness to collaborate with the government to expand access to renewable energy for Nigerians.

The hearing underscores a strong legislative focus on advancing the renewable energy sector, ensuring that investments meet Nigeria’s long-term energy and environmental goals.
