Governor Sanwo-Olu Lauds Nigerian Army, Promises Continued Collaboration

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commended the Nigerian Army for its pivotal role in maintaining peace and security across the state. Speaking during the Year 2024 combined West African Social Activities (WASA) celebration for Headquarters 81 Division Nigerian Army (NA), NA Engineers, and 9 Brigade NA, Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the Army’s efforts in creating a conducive environment for businesses to thrive in Lagos.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, the governor praised the troops for their dedication to safeguarding lives and properties. He expressed gratitude for the robust partnership between the Lagos State Government and the Nigerian Army, emphasizing its contributions to the state’s economic growth. Sanwo-Olu assured the Army of his administration’s continued support and collaboration, citing Lagos as one of the safest states in the country under their watch.

The Commander Corps of Engineers, Major General Philip Eromosele, who declared the event open, described WASA as a significant tradition fostering regimentation and unity among personnel and their families. He highlighted the Corps of Engineers’ achievements in 2024, attributing them to the leadership and support of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede.

In his welcome address, the General Officer Commanding 81 Division NA, Major General Farouk Mijinyawa, noted that WASA marks the conclusion of training activities for the preceding year. He highlighted its role in promoting camaraderie among military personnel, their families, and civilian friends. Major General Mijinyawa expressed appreciation to the COAS for providing resources and guidance for the Division’s operational and training successes.

Brigadier General Hassan Bukar, Commander 81 Division Garrison and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, delivered the vote of thanks, appreciating the governor, dignitaries, and other attendees for their presence and support.

The event featured award presentations to outstanding soldiers, showcasing Nigerian cultural heritage through traditional cuisines, dances, and attire, as well as a tug-of-war contest. The ceremony concluded with the beating of the retreat and the lighting of the bonfire by Governor Sanwo-Olu’s representative, marking a memorable climax to the celebration.

Dignitaries in attendance included senior military officers, heads of security agencies, captains of industries, and well-wishers, reflecting the significance of WASA in fostering unity and appreciation within the Nigerian Army and its host communities.
