Former Lagos State First Lady and founder of the Hope for Women in Nigeria Initiative (HOFOWEM), Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, has called on Nigerian youth, particularly girls, to focus on their ambitions rather than engaging in intimate relationships that could hinder their dreams. Mrs. Ambode delivered this message during the launch of the book “Let the Child Live” by Caroline Oluwadare, a HOFOWEM beneficiary, in Lagos.

Represented by Mrs. Oyefunke Olayinka at the event, Mrs. Ambode emphasized the importance of parents instilling self-discipline, good moral values, and caution against negative influences in their children. “We must raise our children in the way of God, with constant prayers for divine wisdom, guidance, and direction,” she said.

Reflecting on HOFOWEM’s societal impact, Mrs. Ambode noted, “HOFOWEM was envisioned to extend a hand of help to those in need. Little did I know that a tiny seed of hope sown into someone’s life would soon crystallize into a huge testimony, such as we are witnessing today.” She highlighted that HOFOWEM had provided scholarships to Caroline and three other youths, all of whom graduated with First Class Honours.

Mrs. Ambode urged youths to emulate the foundation’s beneficiaries and avoid rushing into risky intimate relationships. “Despite peer pressure and social temptations, Caroline and her colleagues stayed focused on their academic pursuits,” she remarked.

The author, Caroline Oluwadare, emphasized the book’s aim to raise awareness about sexual abstinence and handling teenage pregnancy. “Today’s event is about the long-term impact on society, achieving our SDG Goals 1, 3, and 10,” she said.

Keynote speaker Mrs. Juliet Obijiaku encouraged girls to prioritize their career goals and personal development, avoiding relationships that could jeopardize their dreams. She stressed the importance of awareness campaigns to address teenage pregnancy and support victims.

Book reviewer Mrs. Toyin Olanrewaju praised the author for addressing the issue effectively and urged youth to speak up about teenage pregnancy rather than suffering in silence. She also called on parents to support rather than condemn victims, helping them through difficult times.
