In a series of coordinated operations, the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Badagry has intensified efforts to curb smuggling activities along Nigeria’s waterways and border communities, resulting in significant seizures of contraband, including bags of rice and petroleum products.
In one of the latest operations conducted on March 14, 2025, security operatives intercepted 71 bags of smuggled rice along the Badagry-Porto Novo Creek. While the smugglers initially evaded a patrol team on the waterway, they were eventually intercepted by a land patrol unit at about 03:30 hours. The perpetrators abandoned the goods and fled upon sighting security personnel. The seized rice was immediately transported to the base for further action.
On the same day, acting on intelligence reports, FOB Badagry personnel discovered 5,850 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) hidden in 234 jerrycans at the Bollington beachside. The fuel was reportedly set to be smuggled to Benin Republic via wooden boats. Upon arrival at the location around 00:15 hours, operatives found four vehicles suspected to be used for smuggling, but the culprits fled with the car keys. The seized products were taken to the base for appropriate handling.
In another operation on March 8, 2025, personnel stationed at Tongeji acted on intelligence about smuggling activities in Farasime community. They successfully confiscated 40 jerrycans, each containing 25 liters of PMS, totaling 1,000 liters, which were intended for smuggling across the border. The seized fuel was transferred to a patrol boat and moved to Tongeji without incident.
Earlier, on March 7, 2025, FOB Badagry conducted a night raid at Oulak Filling Station near Badagry Market Junction, following reports of illegal fuel loading. Upon arrival at 22:20 hours, security operatives discovered 6,770 liters of PMS stored in jerrycans, abandoned by smugglers who fled the scene. The station had been under surveillance due to previous suspicions of smuggling activities. The seized fuel and empty jerrycans were taken to the base for further action.
In addition to these seizures, on March 11, 2025, FOB Badagry destroyed 318 jerrycans of seized PMS previously confiscated from Oulak and Mofab filling stations, as well as Tongeji Island. This measure was taken to prevent the recirculation of illegal petroleum products within the area of operations.
These operations highlight FOB Badagry’s continued commitment to combating smuggling and protecting Nigeria’s economic and territorial integrity. Despite the absence of arrests, the confiscation of large quantities of contraband underscores the effectiveness of intelligence-driven enforcement. Security forces remain on high alert, ensuring that illicit trade along the Badagry border is curtailed.
