In a tragic and violent incident, five soldiers were killed on May 30, 2024, when terrorists from the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) attacked a military checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area, near Aba metropolis, Abia State. The troops, part of Operation UDO KA, were ambushed at the Obikabia Junction Checkpoint by terrorists using three tinted Prado Toyota SUVs and support from nearby built-up areas.
The soldiers were deployed to maintain peace and protect local citizens when the surprise attack occurred. The Nigerian Armed Forces expressed deep sorrow over the loss, acknowledging each soldier’s death as a significant blow. “Each and every soldier lost in battle is a terrible loss,” stated Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, in a press release.
Investigations into the attack are ongoing, with the military emphasizing the critical role of community support in combating terrorism. “The lifeline of the terrorist is the people, and this situation is no exception,” said Major General Buba. “Winning the war without the support of the people is close to impossible.”
In response to this heinous act, the military has vowed to retaliate with overwhelming force. “We would bring overwhelming military pressure on the group to ensure their total defeat,” declared Major General Buba, highlighting the military’s commitment to addressing and neutralizing the threat posed by IPOB and ESN.
The Nigerian Armed Forces call for increased cooperation from local communities to prevent future attacks and ensure the safety and security of the region. The loss of these soldiers underscores the ongoing challenges faced in the fight against terrorism and the need for unified efforts to restore peace and stability.
