In a major humanitarian gesture, the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Thursday, July 3, 2025, announced a ₦1 billion donation to support victims of violent attacks in rural communities across Plateau State.
The donation, made through her *Renewed Hope Initiative*, is sourced entirely from private contributions and is aimed at alleviating the suffering of vulnerable populations in conflict-ridden areas.
Addressing a special town hall meeting at the New Government House in Little Rayfield, Jos, Senator Tinubu called on the people of Plateau to break the cycle of violence and embrace unity, peace, and development. “Let this be the last time I visit Plateau under such painful circumstances,” she said. “The next time I come, I want to rejoice with you and celebrate peace, progress, and prosperity.”
Describing her visit as deeply emotional, the First Lady said her heart breaks every time she hears of bloodshed in the country. She emphasized the importance of legacy, urging traditional, religious, and political leaders to reflect on what kind of future they are building for coming generations.
“We appeal to the men—protect us. Let our farmers return to their fields. Let our children move freely across this country without fear,” she pleaded, calling on community stakeholders to work collectively to restore peace.
Senator Tinubu also reaffirmed her confidence in Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang’s leadership, describing him as a unifying figure capable of guiding the state towards healing and development.
In his remarks, Governor Mutfwang expressed deep gratitude to the First Lady, describing her as “a true mother of the nation.” He praised her unwavering compassion and recalled her previous visit, during which she offered generous support to internally displaced persons (IDPs).
“Your return today is a profound encouragement to our people,” the Governor said. “We are working with traditional and religious leaders to ensure that this crisis must end by God’s grace.”
Also present at the event was the wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, who made a symbolic donation of 1,800 bags of 50kg rice. The food items were handed over to the Plateau State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative, Her Excellency Barr. Helen Mutfwang, for distribution to the most vulnerable, including persons living with disabilities.
Goodwill messages poured in from religious and traditional leaders, including Da John Hirse (representing the Gbong Gwom Jos), HRH Muhammadu Sambo II (Emir of Wase and Chairman of JNI), Rev. Amos Mozo (President of COCIN), and Professor Rahila Gowon (on behalf of the women). All speakers applauded the First Lady’s intervention and reaffirmed their commitment to peace-building and national healing.
The event was attended by top government functionaries, members of the judiciary, security chiefs, community leaders, women groups, and other critical stakeholders.
