Three people sustained varying degrees of injuries following the explosion of a disused fire extinguisher in Olodi Apapa, Lagos, on Saturday, February 23, 2025.
According to reports, the incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. when a 40-year-old scrap dealer, who had purchased the used fire extinguisher, attempted to split it open. The device suddenly exploded, causing injuries to him and two other men, aged 50 and 45, who were nearby at the time.
Following the explosion, a concerned resident, identified as Mohammed, reported the matter to the Trinity Police Division at around 5:00 p.m. Emergency responders and bystanders quickly rescued the victims and rushed them to Ajegunle General Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Upon receiving the report, police detectives visited both the scene of the explosion and the hospital, where the injured men were being treated.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the explosion and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
