On Tuesday, September 10, 2024, the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, presided over the 60th regular board meeting of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS). Held at the newly inaugurated NCS headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, this meeting marked the first of its kind since the building’s commissioning by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.
Minister Edun expressed satisfaction with the board’s adherence to quarterly meetings, calling them a cornerstone of effective corporate governance. He emphasized that such regular updates are vital for any government agency to fulfill its objectives and positively impact citizens.
“Board meetings are essential for corporate governance and efficient organization management,” Edun remarked. “They provide direction and ensure that government policies remain on track.”
The Minister commended the Customs Service for its integrity and transparency under the leadership of CGC Adeniyi. He praised the board’s commitment to upholding high standards and achieving its objectives.
Minister Edun also highlighted the importance of collaboration among various ministries and the private sector, noting that the Nigeria Customs Service Board comprises representatives from the Ministries of Trade and Investment, Foreign Affairs, and Finance, along with members of the organized private sector. This diverse representation, he explained, ensures comprehensive discussions and timely implementation of critical national issues.
In a notable first, Minister Edun was the inaugural Finance Minister and NCSB Chairman to chair a meeting at the new NCS Corporate Headquarters. He congratulated the Customs Service on its achievement, commending the new facility’s upkeep and expressing hope for the continued success of its staff.
“I congratulate the Nigeria Customs Service not only for building this new edifice but also for its effective utilization and maintenance. I wish continued success to all who work here,” Edun concluded.
