FERDINAND AGU’S DEMISE: Significant Loss To Maritime Industry, Says NIMASA DG; Family Announces Internment Date

The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, has expressed profound condolences following the passing of Architect Ferdinand Agu, former Director General of the National Maritime Authority (NMA). Dr. Mobereola described Agu’s death as a significant loss to the Nigerian maritime industry, highlighting his substantial contributions and enduring influence in the sector.

The family of the late Ferdinand Agu has announced that his internment will take place on August 2, 2024. The funeral activities will commence on July 23 in Abuja and conclude with an outing service on August 4.

During a condolence visit to Agu’s family, Dr. Mobereola, leading a NIMASA delegation, shared heartfelt remarks on his official X handle @MobereolaD. He praised Agu as a visionary leader who left indelible marks on the nation’s maritime sector during his tenure as the DG of NMA and continued to provide selfless contributions long after his departure from office.

Dr. Mobereola noted that Agu’s achievements at the defunct NMA were instrumental in the success of NIMASA. He recalled that under Agu’s leadership, the NMA played a pivotal role in securing Nigeria’s inclusion on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) White List, signifying compliance with the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW).

Additionally, Dr. Mobereola commended Agu for conceptualizing and initiating the construction of the Nigerian Maritime Resource Development Centre in Kirikiri, Lagos. This facility, he noted, has become a vital asset for NIMASA, housing the Regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre and several critical departments and units.

Ferdinand Agu, a recipient of the national honor of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR), served as the Director General of the National Maritime Authority from 2000 to 2005. His contributions to the maritime industry continue to be celebrated and appreciated by colleagues and stakeholders.
