The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has unveiled its 2024 scorecard, showcasing significant progress in combating crime and maintaining security across the nation’s capital. In a press statement issued by SP Josephine Adeh, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, the achievements were attributed to a comprehensive approach to addressing security challenges in the six area councils of the FCT.
In line with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, the Command implemented strategic measures, including robust community policing, intelligence-led operations, collaboration with sister security agencies, and public enlightenment campaigns. These efforts led to the arrest of 1,077 suspects from 1,426 reported cases and a notable 15.1% reduction in crime incidents compared to 2023.
The Command recorded remarkable results, including the arrest of 216 suspects for kidnapping, 132 for armed robbery, 71 for “one-chance” robbery, and 422 for fraud, among others. It successfully rescued 68 kidnapping victims and 19 victims of “one-chance” robbery. Additionally, ₦409.9 million in cash, 376 firearms, and 99 stolen vehicles were recovered. Several cases were charged to court, with notable convictions, including 58 suspects for fraud, 21 for kidnapping, and 11 each for cultism and car theft.
Amid these achievements, the Command mourned the loss of 140 officers who died in the line of duty, a stark reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers in their commitment to protecting lives and property.
Looking ahead, the Command plans to build on its 2024 successes by intensifying community policing efforts, intelligence-led operations, and public sensitization campaigns to address evolving security threats in the FCT.
The FCT Police Command expressed deep appreciation to the FCT Minister, residents, sister security agencies, the media, and community stakeholders for their unwavering support throughout the year. Residents are encouraged to report emergencies using the Command’s dedicated hotlines and to continue collaborating with law enforcement for a safer and more secure FCT.
As the new year begins, the Command reiterates its commitment to fostering a peaceful and secure environment in the nation’s capital while wishing everyone a prosperous and happy 2025.
